Anyone tried Simple Machines forum software? I've had a quick look and it seems pretty nice.
yeah, I ought to read the posts through properly, I noticed this forum has already been brought up. Still, hehe, I guess here is my vote in it's favour.
I wrote my own! It's been in development on and off for quite a while now, but does the job and is easily customisable since it's my own code. Done in ASP with SQL Server at the moment, but has previously been used with Access and MySQL.

I've always used Ikonboard. It's free, and pretty good, but it's cgi based and I can't get it to work on my server here. Whenever I try to run one of the cgi files, I get error 404, even if I try open it from the directory listing. CGI is enabled on my server, and it's still not working. Can anybody help?
RFH do not have Perl installed, which would probably explain your problem. >.<Originally Posted by schofieldandwhite
darn. Is it possible to request Perl? I'd much rather stick to things I know, since this is for my company, and all three of our staff members have experiece with Ikonboard, and not with anything else.

Unfortuntaly Perl/CGI is something we no longer support/provide due to it no longer being in high demand...Originally Posted by schofieldandwhite

I'm pretty sure Red Fox do not and will not get into supporting PERL unfortunately. Obviously Warren will have the definitive answer on this.Originally Posted by schofieldandwhite
Sorry to break the news.
There are many great and free forums that don't use PERL though, phpBB is probably the most famous. I have been impressed with what I've seen of simple machines forum too.
I'm sure everyone here will pitch in if you need any help getting a php or asp forum working.

EDIT
And now I read Warren has already answered while I was composing my reply. Just too quick aren't you!
Thanks, I might just host the forum elsewhere, and have only our main site on this server. Retraining staff is rather difficult since I live in Preston, the co-owner lives in Luton and our third staff member lives in Florida :p

Depending on how complex the PErl code is it might be possible to compile it under Perl.Net. This will allow you to host under the ASP.Net Framework whilst developing in Perl and leveraging the skill set you already have.
