Online chat service

Hello

Can anyone recommend a free online chat service to put on websites - basically my site is all on Doctor Who and with the new series I think people would like to talk with other people about their views on it etc

Do you have to install the programme as a script or something else like that?

Some of them are free - they are just like PHP/ASP/ASP.NET scripts that you upload and configure...

Hi Andy,

Visit www.hotscripts.com they have a list of chat scripts using ASP, PHP or Perl. I think some can be quite server intensive though if you foresee getting a lot of chatters on a Saturday evening so look at the user ratings and test it as much as you can before going live.

The other alternative could be to set up an IRC channel - it's a bit more complicated as the visitors would need to install an IRC client to be able to access it so it's probably not for the non-techie visitor.

Or if setting up your own chat script doesn't appeal to you you could always look around at some of the hosted chat services which are free but usually stick ads on your chat pages.
