    Default File/Folder synchronisation ...

    Hi,

One of my client's is after a simple way of backing up, or just copying, files and folders from one pc to another across a network.
Idealy something that could be scheduled to run weekly or on demand.

To give an idea of how simple I'm looking for my client thinks that drag and drop folders is too complicated.

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Regards
    Keith.

I forgot to add in ...

Anyone used the XP 'feature' Offline files which appears to do what's required, though I remember the mess I had to untangle with someone elses Briefcase files. Though I must admit this appears to be completely different to briefcase.

    Regards
    Keith.

You could try a software solution:
If it's just data backups, Second Copy 7 would do the job and, once set up, it'd run automatically.
If it's full C:\ drive backups then look at Acronis True Image

XP offline folders is pretty clever - we use it on the laptops, since all files are held on central servers in the office, laptops are easily kept in sync automatically.

As the customer seems to want a really simple solution, then I would also looking at setting up a simple Copy script that can be scheduled using any scheduler.

An Icon to the script can also be placed on the desktop so the user can run it whenever they want a non-scheduled backup.

Thanks for the suggestions, Second Copy looks intersting. I'm going to run the trial they have. Same with offline folders.

I'm going to setup something on my network to test they'll do what I'm after.

    Keith.

I tried Microsoft's offline folders and had some troubles with it - I seem to remember that it wouldn't transfer .htm files or something? Anyway, I've been using Microsofts recently released SyncToy for synchronising my mail and work folders onto my laptop. Very simple and easy to use.
