Default advice on some asp.net books

    Hello all,

I've been wanting to buy a book about asp.net 2.0. I found 2 books that I think are good. I've read another book from the same publisher and I must say I enjoyed it a lot.

    here are the 2 books:

    Professional ASP.NET 2
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...258940-6263062

    Beginning ASP.NET 2.0
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...258940-6263062

I assume both are quite good. I've got no real experience with ASP but I've used Visual Studio 2003 & 2005 (beta2) a lot already. I have quite some experience in application programming in VB.NET.
I'd like to focus more on the webdeveloping side now using probably C#. (I know C & java so I guess C# shouldn't be a problem)

the beginning asp.net 2.0 seems nice because you start with a project that will be finished by the end of the book...

if you however have completly other tips from other books, please do not hesitate to post them.

    Thanks

    Greets

If I'm truthful then I would hang on abit. Most of the .Net 2 books out there at the moment would have been written from the Beta's. Make sure that you check what version that the book was based on. If it was the latest beta then you may be OK otherwise, I would advise to stay clear.

I'm waiting for a month or say before purchasing any books due to this issue.

both books are written for the final edition.
I've checked and it seems they are up to date.

both came out after the release of asp.net 2.0 I believe (or on the same day)

Wrox books are crap. They are at average 20% useful content in them which doesn't represent a good cost vs usefulness ratio in my mind. Look for the Microsoft Press books, or use the SDK documentation (where I started)

I read a book from Wrox on CSS and I loved it
much better than another I have.

yeah the SDK is the best but I prefer to read something not on the computer.
    I like books

I'll check out the Microsoft press books on asp.net, I know I read one for VB.NET and it was quite good indeed.

The best book in my stack is ASP>NET unleashed, this is THE definitive guide to asp.net (1.1 at the moment). Most books I've read about asp.et either give too little information (like SAM's 24 hours which keeps saying "Forms Authentication is out of the scope of this book") or too technical with not enough explanaition (like the MS Press Step by Step book) or waffles on (like the Oreilly Book, programming With asp.net - 8 page code example? no thanks)

The asp.net unleashed book is really comprehensive covering almost everyhing(including XML web services, Databound Controls, GDI+, File System Stuff (serialization, listing directory contents) and encryption) , with selective code examples for eveything. Its easy to read with text broken down into small chunks and examples, Format of the book is such you can read it from back to front (I did). The only downside I can see is that the book has vb.net code examples with C# code examples on CD version of the book, but I wanted to understand vb.net anyway.
