    Default few info about ....

    Hello all,

I'll be releasing an ASP.NET 2.0 website for a client of mine quite soon. I've developed the thing in VS 2005 along with the defaut mssql 2005 EXPRESS edition.
To keep it simple I've used a lot of controls I can just drop into the website. (Like memberships, login and so on...)
Now I've been looking around for documentation but couldn't find any on how to transfer the website that now uses a Express edition to using MSSQ 2000 or 2005 (if it comes available quite soon...)

IMHO, I think there's a lack of documentation on this issue on the microsoft websites. (Or maybe I'm just blind and should "upgrade" my glasses )

so anyway if anyone has experience of documentation about this
I'd love to get some info

    thanks

AFAIK - For the project you simply FTP files the up, for the database you can generate SQL Script, and then you execute the SQL Script again your RFH database. Alternativly, you can open a support ticket requesting the restoral of a database backup.

    See here for SQL http://forums.redfoxuk.com/showthread.php?t=3650

For the website files you have a couple of options in VS2005. On the Build menu there is the publish website option, this allows you to specify a remote FTP server, as well as a local folder, network share or Http. For RFH I would recommend using either FTP or the local folder to publish out the files from VS2005.

If using FTP you would be uploading directly to your webspace. Whereas the local folder method would require you to manually upload the website (using an alternative FTP client).

AFAIK the Http method reeuirs frontpage extensions to be installed on the server and whilst RFH does support this I would not recommend it since installing Frontpage extensions changes the webroots security settings.

I am in the same boat at the moment. Read through Sol's guide but i didnt want to trash it. So RFH doesnt have SQL Server 2005 at the moment? I was looking at creating a db through my cp and it offers me SQL server 7, SQL server 2005 and 2000 and MYSQL oh and rubbish access... why is it there if it doesnt work.

i totally agree with psykik there just isnt enough information and the .net forums were useless for getting the info!!

Because as a reseller you have added SQL 2005 Quota to your hosting plan? Even though your reseller plan has now SQL 2005 Quota?

Thanks, but if you feel it needs to be trashed please do, otherwise future guides I may post will not be an improvement.

As mentioned RFH do't currently offer SQL 2005, but when working with Sql Server Management Studio there is an option for scripting using SQL 2000 compatability which you should use when generating database scripts which you can use to generate scripts to run on the RFH SQL 2000 servers.

I also agree that there is a real lack of information at the moment, and I think that is in most part due to the ruluctance of people to upgrade existing SQL Server installs. In addition people with a good knowledge of SQL keep alot of things to themselves unless asked directly for the information.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...aght000014.asp

    hope this helps
