Can anyone recommend ways to get a website higher up the Search Engine results?

The site I have developed is unique and no other domain or company comes close to its name.

The number one way to get your site higher up the search engine results is to have plenty of links to your site from other (more popular the better) sites.

Search engines spiders trawl pages automatically, and therefore you need to make your pages as accessible as possible, and make sure they make sense in a text-only format. Always use alt tags on images etc etc.

Search engines, as far as I am aware, really don't rate the meta data, description and keywords - sticking loads of stuff is not going to help. Just make sure the content on your pages is well written, and think about the way people would type a relevant search query into a search engine, and have some similarly written text in your pages.

I do think that search engines put a fair amount of bias on the title of your web page, presumably this is why so many pages out there today have stupidly long titles.

If you wanted to get really clever you can start messing about with internal links in your site to bias different pages. eg. you can try and have all pages of your site with average ranking, or you could try to focus the bias on just one page.
