Default Connecting to SQL Server 2005 with SQL Server Management Studio Express

    Hello,

The Helm control panel told me to install SQL Server Management Studio Express to work on my Red Fox hosted databases. I got it and installed ot and it works on my own computer, letting me greate and work on databases, but I cannot connect to the hosted database.

SQLSMSE opens with a "Connect to Server" window and asks for information (I may have put in the wrong things).

    Server Type: Database Engine
    Server Name: mssql2005.neon.lon.periodicnetwork.com
    Authentication: SQL Server Authentication
    - Login: (my redfox hosting login)
    - Password: (hosting password)

    It does not work, saying:
    TITLE: Connect to Server
    ------------------------------
    Cannot connect to mssql2005.neon.lon.periodicnetwork.com.
    ------------------------------
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10061)

    ------------------------------
    BUTTONS:
    OK
    ------------------------------

I have been on Microsoft's web site and I think I have the firewall and other settings on my computer ok.

Please tell me what is going wrong. (I am guessing it is something to do with me being stupid)

    Thanks,

    Jack.

    Server Name should be:
    mssql2005.neon.lon.periodicnetwork.com,PORT

(where PORT is shown in Helm)

I have just done what you said and it works. You have been amazingly helpful (and really quick too)!

Do we have to use RedFox hosting login/password or database user login and password?

When conecting to SQL Server 2005 you need to use the database login and password that you create.

    Thanks again Tanzy.

So for those who try to connect through SQL Studio, what was said above is wrong.
Do not use your RedFox login and pwd.

Ah OK - yes, your account number and password is only used to login to the control panels (and shortly the helpdesk). There are some instances where your account password is used as the password on things like default FTP accounts but they are never related or synchronized.
