    Default Another one........

We had built http://www.publicimagemarket.com/ (for a client)

Lots of interest, loads of signups and image uploads but the guy just does not market it at all. Its a clever site with a good backend allowing pre-approval of images etc all coded from scratch. Idea is that keen photographers upload images and try and sell them as stock images.

    Waste of time or potential??

Are you looking to sell it or just looking for feedback?

The site itself is good and I do thing there is potential for a good turnover alright althought I would recommend giving specifics of the percentages offered to photographers on the photographers page

honest answer - waste of time - there are a lot of large sites offering the facility for photographers to sell images

check http://www.fotolia.com/ for a great example

Market is saturated in that area. Hoping someone will visit and purchase is not enough. The only way to make money now is direct selling to large publications using the image library as an exclusive reference. I know a couple of guys doing this for some national newspapers and they only just break even.

    Interesting.....

We only built the site (was a nice one to build money wise), I do want the owners to make it a success but to date they have had just one sale. Was really just looking for feedback but if someone was interested in it I guess the owners may sell it (they just sit back and wait for people to go to the site - 0% marketing to date)

do you not feel slightly guilty about the lack of sucess of the site and have you guided them on how they should market the site

I do not feel guilt in the slightest. We met many times to discuss the site and as the guy was selling shares to pay for it I made it clear that it was a risky move and to make sure he knew what he was doing. He had friends in London who run a PR fiirm and assured me he knew what was involved. I also tried to talk him out of spending another £1K to add all sorts of features for mac users but he didnt listen, 98% of visits are pc XP as I told him the case would be. The reason I hoped for success was for portfoliio purposes, continued hosting and the fact that the guy was putting a lot on the line to do it. Marketing it was never our remit.

Good man, nice to hear he wanted to please us mac-ies (though I'm not sure why anything would need to be mac specific on the web). Money well spent I'd say

The site is nice enough, but I have to agree with cjs, you need the large clients, and it's probably going to take more than just 'nice' to get them on board.
