Default customisable forum \ portal needed

    Hi

I need your thoughts on the best way forward, One of my clients, wants a forum\portal that will enable them to vet each forum member at sign up, and also they want to be able to change the signup questions to match more closely the purpose of the site, It wont look very professional asking for someones messenger ot Sykpe id when it is irrelevant to the purpose, but would want to ask questions about their ability within the field of what the site is about.

Any ideas? Ive had a look at .net nuke and this seems overly complicated for what they are after.

    cheers

If it is mainly a forum that you are after, I can highly recommend vBulletin®. It is customisable to a degree. I'm sure that other people on here can give you better details about it than me though.

    Just chill

From experience VBulletin handles this very well, you can set it to email you about new registrants and wait for you approve them. Custom registration fields are also easy to implement.

The current version of phpBB doesn't seem to handle this as well, you can set registration options so Admin has to activate new registrations but there doesn't seem to be an automated process for this. You have to check for new members, look up each one and activate them. I'm sure there is a mod to automate this but mods are messy and make upgrading more frustrating.

As you mentioned .Net I thought I'd throw Community Server in here. It might be a little more complex then some of the others to customize the sign-up process (would require sub-classing the core source or with the latest version you could use the ASP.Net Mebership / Profile provider model).

I should also mention that this whilst open source is not as free as it used to be.

If you do require free, then you could look at AspNetForums which this was originally based upon, however a lot of features have been added since.
