Default thinking of signing up - need more info...

    Hi guys,

thinking of signing up for a pro account - do you have a full breakdown of the level of provision for development on the asp.net platform? the sales pitch on your site is a little on the skimpy side. Bear in mind I'm comparing against these guys who I'm currently using for hosting and currently utterly dissatisfied with due to poor server performance -> http://www.discountasp.net/
I'm a professional asp.net developer so if you can bet if it's on that list at discountasp.net I'll want it.

also.. I'd need the account setting up within 48hrs is that doable?

    cheers

    Tom

My experience of asp.net and sql 2005 which is my development prefernce is outstanding with redfox. They probably do not have every component than you current host has but that is something you could negotiate / buy / borrow when required.

    Hi Tom,

I don't want to sound rude, but you state you are a professional asp.net developer and imply that you will use every feature available. Unfortunately I would disagree with this since a true professional will know what features are required for what they wish to accomplish.

The key thing here is that you are using .Net and hence your biggest concern is whether or not sites run in Medium or Full Trust. All RFH servers are configured for Medium Trust and hence if you have any code that does require Full Trust you'd need to look either for a dedicated server or another company. Other than that what other features are there? I ask this since almost all the other features are contained within assemblies that can be placed in your local BIN folder (I'm taking for granted that RFH update to the latest release version of the framework quite quickly).

I think where the differences will lie is in the other features not ASP.Net related, such as databases and email. For example I'm not sure if RFH offer Full-Text Search in SQL, and I know they don't have a way to attach an MDF.

The best thing I have found with RFH is that they listen to the userbase requests for new features, and many one-off requests are taken care off by simply opening a support ticket (a good example off this is setting up a scheduled task).

I would certainly reccommend RFH, but would say that you need to define the features you require as opposed to just ask if they support every feature.

Default thanks for the feedback ppl..

Hi all, thanks for the feedback - nice and quick

Hmm. Perhaps I wasn't too clear there - this'll be my sandbox - ie: where I try 'stuff' out, ergo it'll have plenty of component turnover as I take on board new (and as yet unknown) technologies.

I was assuming Medium Trust, that's pretty normal, the bin folder thing was an absolute must and also assumed...

Big things for me at the moment are: .Net 3, Linq and the imminent System.Web.MVC CTP... I'd also want to host SubText for the short term too.

How about daemon/service support? db4o? Would you mind me making http calls out from the webserver?

The speed of the server is critical too - disc/asp were - well - lousy.

    cheers

Hmm... developing on a live production server where others host mission critical sites?

    Indeed, this isn't recommended.

Well I don't run Windows Server at home, oddly enough. And being MicroShaft it behaves differently to all the other versions of windows.

Which reminds me, what secure methods of uploading do you support.

Why not? Just become a Microsoft Partner and get the Action Pack for £200 then you've got almost all the software you need.

And if you've really only got 1 box put Virtual PC 2007 on it for your day-to-day stuff.
