This installation guide is based on version 4.8 of DotNetNuke. However, the process has been fairly stable and consistent for the last few versions, from about 4.3. Later versions may have extra steps.
The requirements are:
- Website is configured to run ASP.Net Version 2
- Microsoft SQL Server (MS SQL) Database and User Created
1) First download the latest version of DotNetNuke install.
2) Extract the zip file to a folder.
3) Once the file is extracted up need to upload it to the Redfox servers. Log into your site via ftp and upload the files to the folder where you want to install DNN. Note: DNN needs to be in a virtual application folder. This could be either a sub domain, the root of your site or a virtual folder.
4) The next step is to navigate to the root of installation from within a web browser. So if for example you installed DNN into a sub-domain called DNN you need to navigate to http://dnn.yourdomain.com/. Once you navigate to this location the installation wizard should start. You will be presented with the following screen:
5) From here you need to select Custom as shown below:
6) Once you have done this select Next, you will then be presented with the following screen:
7) At this point click Test Permissions this will make sure that you have the correct folder permissions. If you do not get the green text at the bottom after testing permissions then I would advise that you contact support before proceeding further.
8) Once you have checked the folder permissions, click on Next. This will then take you to the section for setting up your database connection as below:
9) At this point make sure that you select the SQL Server 2000/2005 database as that is what we will be using:
10) Once you have selected SQL server you are presented with more options. The screen shot below details these options:
Points to note here:
11) Once these details have been entered click Test Database. Upon testing you should get the following screen confirming that the connection was successful:
- Make sure that you enter the Internal Server name for the database server.
- Make sure that Integrated Security is not selected.
- Enter the database user name for the database that you are using.
- Enter the Password for the database user that you are using.
- Make sure that Run as db Owner is selected (it is just safer).
- The Object Qualifier is optional. If you are using the same database for other applications then I suggest that you use this and set it to something like dnn_. This is what gets put at the start of the database table names.
12) Once the database connection is confirmed then you need to click Next. At this point the database will start to be installed and you will be presented with the following screen:
13) Once the database has been installed you will be presented with this screen:
You can't proceed until you reach this screen. Once you are here and the database has installed successfully, click Next.
14) You will then be asked to enter the host account user name and details.
15) Once you have entered the user name and details for the host account that you want. You will be presented with the option of selecting what default DNN modules that you want to install:
As you can see there are some default ones that you can't change. Select the modules that you want to install and click on Next.
16) The next screen asks you what authentication services you want to install. Just leave this with the defaults and click on Next.
17) The next few screens we just leave as the defaults. I am showing them below for completeness:
18) Select Language Packs.
19) Next we have to set up the initial portals admin account and the portal title. Enter the required details and click on Next.
20) You should then be presented with the screen below. DNN is now installed, click Finished and you will be taken to your portal.
Your new portal:
I hope that this guide helps people.
