In the early days of the beginning of web hosting business,
companies used to give hosting service not in domains but
with URLs under their domains ...
    http://www.hostingcompany.com/companyA
    was a common use.

I was thinking in using the same approach with SQL Reporting
Services, give some of the customers who could require it
a path inside a Reporting Services enabled subdomain.

You could do that, but plan quotas would soon start to run out.

So, in effect, there could be apps from more than 40 domains hosted on each server?

No, there can never be more than 40 domains - but obviously you could host a lot of things under that one domain...

I realise the number of hosted domains is limited to 40 but, if a domain is allowed to host apps for unlimited remote domains too, then the performance of the other hosted domains could be compromised.

Thats true, but its something we would soon pick up on and frown upon - it is still shared hosting so acceptable use polices apply to ensure all customers receive the share of the service they pay for.

So I can compare this to what you currently offer, on average what is the maximum number of domains that you currently have on any one server?

The Premier service will never have more than 40 domains on each Premier server.
