Default Which e-commerce would suit best

I have been asked by an owner of a site the I host "what is the best e-commerce for my site" and as I have never looked at any of the offerings out there I'm unsure how best to answer him.

His site will sell Football Shirts and other football related item but not on a large scale so it will not be making lots of money.

I have suggested that he uses Google Checkout for accepting his payments but have no idea which commerce package to use.

I have looked at two so far which are Roman Cart and Magento and to be honest I have not got a clue what I'm looking for.

Any pointers you can give that I can pass on?

    Thanks

    Martyn

    I'd say have a look at http://www.shopify.com
If I was choosing something to install on my server, to run something fairly complex, large or heavily customised, I would probably choose Magento.

magento doesnt work all too well on redfox. It can be made to work, but the backend is SLOOOOOOOWWWWWW so much so that you'll be tearing out your hair. I also came across a number of problems where things just "werent doing what they should". I believe it is because red fox runs IIS, and magento only supports apache.

The main problem with magento is its hugely bloated codebase. It is commonly understood that it requires a dedicated server for each shop. Any requests in the forum for support are invariably followed by accusations of shared hosting and a refusal to assist in the event that shared hosting has been admitted. Combine that with IIS and you don't have a stable, supported solution for the future.

That said, MAgento's functionality appears to be excellent, and with a dedicated server, and apache, you would likely find it the best solution for scalability and functionality.

I gave up and now use a shopping cart plugin for wordpress!! it actually had a couple of useful functions which magento didnt have at all.
